Rompetrol Rafinare to develop 4.8 MW photovoltaic plant at Vega Ploiești refinery

    Published on

Rompetrol Rafinare is continuing its investments aimed at increasing energy efficiency and reducing the carbon footprint of the Vega Ploiești refinery through the development of a 4.8 MW photovoltaic power plant, coupled with an energy storage system of approximately 9 MWh.

The new photovoltaic facility is expected to generate more than 6,200 MWh of renewable electricity annually, with the entire volume intended for the refinery’s own consumption. The integrated storage system will enable more flexible management of the electricity produced and help optimize its use according to the refinery’s consumption profile and operational requirements.

According to Rompetrol Rafinare, the project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 3,800 tonnes of CO₂ annually, supporting the improvement of the energy and environmental performance of the Vega industrial platform.

The photovoltaic project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028.

The investment is part of the ongoing modernization and efficiency program at the Vega refinery, which has contributed to higher yields and more efficient technological processes. Among the projects implemented is the modernization of the Vacuum Distillation Unit, which increased its yield from approximately 60% to almost 90%.

Vega is currently the only refinery in Romania producing bitumen and n-hexane. Its operational development continues to be supported by investments in modernization, technological upgrades and process optimization.

The new renewable energy project is expected to further strengthen the refinery’s energy efficiency while contributing to the gradual reduction of its environmental footprint.
