Allianz-Țiriac, one of the largest insurance companies in Romania, incurred costs of 15.7 million lei for claims occurring in holidays or trips abroad and for claim reserves for travel insurance policies in the first half of 2025. The amount is 56% higher compared to the same period last year, reflecting both the increasing risks and Romanians’ growing need for a safety net against medical emergencies and unforeseen events that may occur while traveling abroad.
In total, Romanians purchased travel insurance policies from Allianz-Țiriac worth 34.5 million lei in the first six months of this year, up by 47%. Most of them covered trips within Europe, where statistics show that the majority of holidays and visits to friends and family take place.
The largest claim paid by Allianz-Țiriac in 2025 amounted to approximately 150,000 lei for an emergency surgical intervention for a client on holiday in Turkey. The compensation in this case was more than 2,100 times higher than the premium paid by the insured person. In the previous year, the largest claim was for a client who suffered a bicycle accident in Austria, with multiple pelvic and upper limb injuries. Hospitalization and the necessary surgical interventions alone amounted to approximately 125,000 lei, with added costs for helicopter transport.
With a travel insurance policy, clients benefit from protection and financial support in situations such as accidents, medical emergencies including dental, emergency medical transportation, as well as other travel-related expenses caused by events like lost or delayed luggage, lost documents, trip interruption and/or cancellation, or damages caused to others. For example, through the trip cancellation clause, included in approximately 1% of issued policies, clients were covered against financial losses in the event of trip cancellation or interruption due to insured reasons, thereby recovering advance payments for transportation, accommodation or tourist services, with total claims amounting to nearly 200,000 lei in the past year.
“A travel insurance policy provides complete protection for worry-free holidays and trips abroad, complementing the European Health Insurance Card, which offers only limited coverage within public healthcare systems. The most common risks are not necessarily extraordinary, but they can become very costly, reaching tens of thousands of euros. Many families cannot access such amounts, especially at short notice and far from home, and with a policy purchased quickly and easily online, including annual coverage, there is no need to worry about money, but only about solving the situation. Allianz-Țiriac travel insurance offers tailored coverage both for Romanians traveling abroad for leisure or business, as well as for those living in the diaspora who want to protect their family in Romania when visiting”, explains Aurel Badea, Deputy CEO at Allianz-Țiriac Asigurări.
