Continental Tires Timisoara is investing in modernizing its production halls and embracing sustainable solutions. By implementing innovative heat pump systems and solar panels, the company is creating an efficient working environment while making a positive impact on the environment.
The company has recently started a large-scale renovation project in one of its production halls at its tire plant in Timisoara. The project aims to improve ergonomics further for employees, optimize industrial processes and make a positive impact on the environment. The investment in modernizing the production hall went beyond renovating the existing structure. It also included a number of advanced technical solutions aimed at improving safety, energy efficiency and employee comfort.
Among the most significant upgrades are the installation of a modern fire protection system that meets the latest safety standards, the implementation of a rainwater harvesting system to reduce water wastage and enhance water efficiency, and the installation of an LED lighting system to ensure low energy consumption.
In addition, to maintain an optimal indoor climate, the hall now benefits from an innovative high-efficiency water-to-water heat pump system. This system heats and cools the hall using 100 percent recovered energy from the production equipment, without additional energy consumption. This marks a first for Continental tire plants. Furthermore, Continental wants to gradually implement these new heat pump technologies across all buildings on the industrial platform in Timisoara. In line with Continental’s commitment to sustainability and carbon neutrality, the plant aims to continue expanding the use of green energy resources in 2025, including the installation of a solar panel system covering 13,000 square meters. These solar panels will generate a maximum power of about 3.1 MWp (MegaWatt peak), contributing significantly to the reduction of energy consumption from conventional sources and providing about 20 percent of the total energy needs of the plant through solar energy.
These investments are part of Continental’s global commitment to reduce carbon emissions and integrate renewable energy solutions.
What’s more, Continental Tires Timisoara obtains the ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) certification, an internationally recognized standard that attests the use of sustainable materials in production processes. With this certification, the plant will be able to integrate certified sustainable materials into its production without complicating existing recipes, thus supporting the transition to products with reduced environmental impact.
In addition to the modernization of the infrastructure, the Timisoara plant also contributes to the production of Continental’s newest tires, the two latest models, EcoContact 7 and EcoContact 7 S, reinforcing the plant’s position as a major center for innovation in sustainable mobility. These tires are developed for all types of vehicles and offer high energy efficiency, low fuel consumption and low rolling noise.
“Investments in modernizing infrastructure and expanding renewable energy sources are essential to maintain our competitiveness and to provide our employees with an optimal working environment. We want to be an example of best practice in the industry and demonstrate that technology and sustainability can go hand in hand”, says Șerban Nicolescu, plant manager of Continental Tires.
