Hidroelectrica completed an investment of 82.7 million RON at the Iron Gates I dam

Hidroelectrica has completed an investment of 82.7 million RON regarding “additional protection measures” for the dissipator of the Iron Gates I spillway dam.

The work was necessary to increase the life of the spillway of the Iron Gates I dam and to prevent degradation of the downstream spur of the dissipator.

“The contract for the realization of the investment took place over a period of two years, the actual realization of the works on the site requiring 6 months – said Bogdan Badea, the president of the Hidroelectrica Directorate. We are talking about a complex intervention for this objective, an intervention that required experience and high technical skills. It is an important achievement, which demonstrates Hidroelectrica’s commitment to develop and modernize Romania’s energy infrastructure and to ensure a sustainable and secure energy system for future generations.”

The need for the execution of additional protection works for the dissipator of Iron Gates I dam appeared in 2008 when, following the control carried out in the downstream regularization area of the dam, erosion was found both at the dissipator and in the Danube bed immediately downstream of the dam.

The Portile de Fier I spillway dam, located on the Danube at km 943, was built by Romania in collaboration with Serbia and is part of the Iron Gates I Hydropower and Navigation System (SHEN).
