Transelectrica increases its cross-border capacity starting January 1, 2021

    Published on

Transelectrica, as a transmission and system operator, ensures, starting with January 1, 2021, a significant cross-border capacity with the countries with which it operates interconnected – Bulgaria, Hungary, Serbia and Ukraine – of 2,800 MW for export from Romania and 3,000 MW for import in Romania.

Through the extensive investment program in which the company is engaged, in the next five years, this cross-border capacity will double, which will allow the development of coupled electricity markets at European level, thus contributing to achieving the objectives of the European Union, “Internal electricity market” and “Clean energy for all Europeans.”

“Strengthening the electricity transmission network with an emphasis on increasing interconnection capacity is one of the priority objectives we have assumed. Romania, through Transelectrica, is part of the European electricity network and has the mission to ensure both national energy security and European energy security. We have significant investments underway that will help to double cross-border capacity by 1 January 2026, so that it is in line with European requirements. The target is over 5,000 MW “, said Catalin Nitu, General Executive Director of CNTEE Transelectrica SA.

At the beginning of 2020, the cross-border capacity provided by Romania was around 2200 MW export / import.
