Bucharest’s Top Companies: Recognising and Promoting Business Excellence

    Published on

The Bucharest Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIB) organised the 33rd edition of the Bucharest Top Companies Awards, a landmark event in the capital’s economic calendar. This year’s event was held under the slogan “We Celebrate Your Excellence by Promoting Performance and Creating Partnership Opportunities.”

Among the distinguished guests who honoured the Bucharest Chamber with their presence were Professor Emil Constantinescu, PhD, President of Romania from 1996 to 2000; Ciprian Ciucu, General Mayor of Bucharest; Adrian Zvâncă, President of the National Agency for Employment; Doru Claudian Frunzulică, Vice President of the Romanian Agency for Investments and Foreign Trade (ARICE); and Mihai Daraban, President of the Romanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIR).

“Recognised performance requires clearly defined objectives, investment, a constant focus on efficiency, and a willingness to rethink strategies when circumstances demand it. It means building for the long term without losing sight of technological change, customer expectations and competitive pressures. This is what our award winners have done and continue to do. Even in this challenging year, they have succeeded in turning their plans into sustainable businesses that generate added value,” said Iuliu Stocklosa, President of the Bucharest Chamber, in his opening address at the awards ceremony.

According to the ranking methodology, of the 182,535 companies headquartered in Bucharest that filed their financial statements for 2025—an increase of 2.4% compared with the previous year—71,173 companies (39% of the total) met the eligibility criteria. Of these, the CCIB recognised 7,465 companies, representing 10.5% of all eligible entrants. Among the award recipients, 811 companies (11%) qualified for the Excellence Trophy by securing a place among the top three for five consecutive years. Notably, 459 of these companies (57%) maintained this level of performance for ten consecutive years.

Emphasising the place and role of the private sector in Romania’s economy, Professor Emil Constantinescu concluded his remarks with an appeal to entrepreneurs: “Do not focus solely on personal success and self-esteem. Make them known as widely as possible in a world that urgently needs role models embodying authentic values, as I am convinced those being recognised today for their achievements do.”

“I am here out of respect for this institution and, above all, for Bucharest’s business community. We owe you a great deal! The business community has advanced far ahead of public administration. You have managed to bring the Bucharest–Ilfov Region to a GDP comparable to that of Bulgaria, while GDP per capita in Bucharest is on a par with Vienna,” emphasised Ciprian Ciucu, General Mayor of Bucharest. On this occasion, the mayor also discussed municipal projects aimed at supporting the business community and developing Bucharest, including initiatives to digitalise public administration and establish a Destination Management Organisation.

Mihai Daraban, President of the CCIR, highlighted the polarisation of the Romanian economy. “The 12,943 companies included in the National Top Companies ranking account for just 1.37% of those that filed financial statements, yet they generated 53.7% of total national turnover, amounting to €299 billion.” In this context, the president of the national chamber addressed the challenges facing the business community, particularly energy prices, which “make any industrial activity in Romania prohibitively expensive.”

Despite the volatile and challenging macroeconomic environment, companies in Bucharest have reaffirmed the essential role played by the capital’s entrepreneurial community in supporting the national economy. The 7,465 companies included in the Bucharest Top Companies ranking generated combined turnover of €144 billion, operating profit of €13 billion, and 592,000 jobs. These results demonstrate Bucharest’s economic strength and reinforce the capital’s position as the principal driver of Romania’s economy.

In terms of sectoral distribution, the largest number of companies recognised by the CCIB operate in services, with 2,641 companies accounting for 35.4% of the total. They are followed by companies in trade, numbering 2,046 (27.4%), and industrial businesses, with 1,455 companies (19.5%).

The CCIB ranking was compiled using a comprehensive methodology applied consistently across the national chamber-of-commerce network. It assesses business performance based on a range of quantitative and qualitative financial and economic indicators.

In addition to awards recognising economic results achieved in 2025 and the Excellence Trophies, several special trophies and diplomas were presented. This year, the “George G. Assan” Trophy for “Romanian Brand of the Year” went to the Maguay Group of Companies, while the “Ioan V. Socec” Trophy was awarded to Digi 24 for its Business Club programme. For the first time, the ESG and Sustainability Trophy was presented to BRD – Groupe Société Générale.
