Hidroelectrica awards contract for 64 MW / 434.76 MWh battery storage facility at Porțile de Fier II

    Published on

Hidroelectrica has awarded the contract for the development of a battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Porțile de Fier II hydropower plant, with an installed power capacity of 64 MW and a storage capacity of 434.76 MWh. The total investment amounts to RON 296.8 million.

The contract was awarded following the completion of the applicable public procurement procedures. The winning bid was submitted by Synergy Construct.

The investment marks an important stage in the company’s transition towards an energy model in which renewable power generation is complemented by the ability to store, manage and dispatch electricity according to system dynamics and consumption needs.

“For Hidroelectrica, the energy transition means more than developing new generation capacity. It means building the infrastructure that allows us to efficiently capture the value of renewable energy and respond flexibly to the needs of the National Power System. The Porțile de Fier II BESS project is a strategic step in this direction and confirms Hidroelectrica’s commitment to investing in the technologies that will shape the energy sector of tomorrow,” said Iulius-Dan Plaveti, CEO of Hidroelectrica.

The storage facility will allow Hidroelectrica to optimize its generation profile over a 24-hour period, shift electricity towards higher-value time intervals and increase the flexibility of its overall generation portfolio.

“Our strategy is not focused solely on adding new generation capacity, but on building a balanced, flexible and resilient portfolio. Energy storage gives us the ability to optimize our generation profile throughout the 24-hour cycle, shift electricity towards periods of higher value and respond more effectively to hydrological and market conditions. In this way, we are creating the foundations for sustainable profitability and the long-term development of the company,” said Iulius-Dan Plaveti, CEO of Hidroelectrica.

The project will receive RON 43.4 million in funding through the Modernisation Fund, under the “Support for investments in the development of electricity storage capacities (batteries)” programme implemented by the Romanian Ministry of Energy.

By securing this funding and implementing the investment, Hidroelectrica is contributing to the development of Romania’s modern energy infrastructure and creating the conditions for a more efficient use of renewable electricity.

The development of the Porțile de Fier II BESS project is part of Hidroelectrica’s broader strategic direction to modernize and diversify its energy infrastructure and adapt to the changing conditions of the electricity market.
