Nuclearelectrica announces that Unit 1 of the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant will be shut down in a controlled manner and disconnected from the National Energy System on the morning of July 28, 2026. Unit 1 will be shut down in a controlled manner due to the very low, unprecedented water level of the Danube caused by severe drought, in accordance with the plant’s procedures applicable in situations of severe drought.

The shutdown follows the most recent forecasts issued by the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA). In the event that certain parameters associated with the low water level of the Danube reach the allowed operating limits, in compliance with nuclear safety procedures and standards, the nuclear power plant’s experts will implement the necessary operational measures to maintain safety margins, including the decision to shut down one unit or even both units if the current situation does not change.

Such measures are preventive and aim to protect nuclear safety and the reliability of the facilities. Nuclearelectrica is closely monitoring the evolution of the Danube River’s water level to ensure safe operation. Keeping Unit 1 of the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant in a safe shutdown has no impact on nuclear safety, personnel, or the environment.
