Romania’s gas consumption jumps 17 percent amid cold weather, as storage reaches 65 percent, Energy Minister says

    Published on

Romania’s natural gas consumption has increased to nearly 58 million cubic meters per day, about 17 percent higher than the annual average for the same period in 2025, while gas storage facilities are currently 65 percent full — 11 percent above the European Union average, Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan said on Monday after a meeting of the National Energy Command Center.

“I convened the National Energy Command Center both today and on Friday to make sure that, in the context of the severe cold weather warning, Romania is prepared with sufficient natural gas to cover average consumption. At present, gas consumption has risen to around 58 million cubic meters per day, approximately 17 percent above the annual average for the same period in 2025,” Ivan said.

According to the minister, domestic production stands at around 23.6 million cubic meters per day, while 25.5 million cubic meters are withdrawn daily from storage. The remaining demand is covered by imports from neighboring countries.

Romania entered the winter season with gas storage facilities filled to 100 percent as of November 1, following purchases made during the summer. Currently, storage levels remain at 65 percent, which is 6 percent higher than at the same time last year.

Ivan emphasized that Romania is well prepared to handle the current cold spell thanks to close coordination between gas producers, transport operators, and distributors.

Regarding electricity production, Romania currently generates an average of about 7,800 megawatts, while consumption is around 8,500 megawatts. Of total production, 24 percent comes from hydrocarbons (mainly gas), 24 percent from hydropower, 16 percent from nuclear energy, and 14 percent from coal.

“If we had not negotiated with the European Commission to keep coal-fired power plants running, today we would be facing a major problem in electricity production,” Ivan said. He added that Completul Energetic Oltenia is extracting about 30,000 tons of coal per day, a record level, despite harsh winter conditions.
