Romania is approaching a decisive period for its economic credibility as key international assessments converge, prompting the American Chamber of Commerce in Romania (AmCham Romania) to call for faster implementation of structural reforms and stronger political commitment to the country’s economic agenda.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the business organization said the coming days are crucial for meeting the milestones under Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), a prerequisite for securing the final tranche of EU recovery funding.
AmCham noted that the country is also under scrutiny from international credit rating agencies, which are reassessing Romania’s fiscal outlook after concerns over widening budget deficits resurfaced. At the same time, the final stage of Romania’s accession process to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) places additional emphasis on the government’s ability to deliver on long-promised reforms.
According to AmCham, these parallel evaluations will be driven by Romania’s track record in implementing reforms rather than by political commitments alone.
The organization argued that businesses and taxpayers have already absorbed the impact of recent fiscal consolidation measures and now expect authorities to follow through on structural reforms designed to strengthen public finances and improve the investment climate.
AmCham warned that delays in implementing these commitments could weaken investor confidence, jeopardize Romania’s sovereign credit rating, and reduce the country’s attractiveness for new investment projects. The organization also pointed to increasing caution among investors, saying prolonged political uncertainty and an unpredictable policy environment are prompting companies to postpone expansion plans while focusing on maintaining existing operations and employment.
The statement comes as Romania seeks to preserve its investment-grade status, maximize the use of available EU recovery funds, and complete its OECD accession process, all of which are seen as critical to the country’s long-term economic stability and competitiveness.
