Aukera secures 48.5 million euros financing for second phase of Romania’s largest battery storage project

    Published on

Aukera Energy has signed a 48.5 million euros financing agreement with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, to fund the second phase of the Gura Ialomiței Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Romania.

The financing package includes €40 million in capital expenditure funding and an additional €8.5 million VAT facility, supporting the construction of the remaining 100 MW / 200 MWh of storage capacity. Once completed, the Gura Ialomiței project will reach 250 MW / 500 MWh, becoming Romania’s largest operational battery energy storage facility and one of the largest in Central and Eastern Europe. Commercial operations for the second phase are expected to begin in early 2027.

Catalin Breaban, Co-Founder of Aukera, said the financing demonstrates both the quality of the project and the investment opportunities emerging in Romania’s energy storage market. He noted that attracting international capital of this scale represents an important milestone for the company and for Romania’s growing battery storage sector.

Aiden Yates, Managing Director and Head of Structured Finance at Aukera, described IFC’s participation as a significant milestone that reinforces the bankability of utility-scale battery storage projects and strengthens the company’s relationships with international financing partners.

Headquartered in Brussels, Aukera develops, finances, builds and operates renewable energy and battery storage projects across five European markets. The company currently has more than 810 MW under construction or in operation and a development pipeline exceeding 14 GW.
