Otokar signs agreement to acquire Automecanica and launch production in Medias

    Published on

Otokar, Türkiye’s leading exporter of land systems and a strategic supplier to NATO and the United Nations, has announced the signing of an agreement to acquire Automecanica S.A. and its production facility in Mediaș, Romania.

The completion of the transaction is subject to obtaining local regulatory approvals. Through this investment, Otokar takes a significant step in its European industrial strategy and reaffirms its long-term commitment to developing a national defense manufacturing capability in Romania, in line with its obligations under the COBRA II ATBTU Program.

Following a process initiated in January 2026, the agreement for the acquisition of 96.77% of Automecanica S.A.’s share capital was signed on April 29, 2026, for approximately €85 million. With this move, Otokar becomes a defense equipment manufacturer with industrial operations in the European Union—marking a strategic milestone that positions the company to play a more active role in European military procurement processes.

“This investment is a concrete expression of Otokar’s long-term commitment to Romania,” said Aykut Özüner, CEO of Otokar. “Through this agreement, we are not just fulfilling a contract—we are contributing to Romania’s industrial sovereignty and its ability to support allied defense on NATO’s Eastern Flank.”

Vehicles produced in Türkiye under the COBRA II ATBTU Program have already been manufactured, delivered to Romania, and are currently in service with the Romanian Armed Forces. At the same time, all preparations at the Mediaș facility have been completed, and the initial phases of local production are already underway. Full assembly operations are scheduled to begin in June 2026.

The Mediaș production facility covers approximately 140,000 square meters and currently employs over 250 workers and technical staff. The site is fully equipped with the infrastructure and certifications required for the serial production of armored vehicles in compliance with NATO standards.
