Mihaela Suciu, CEO of Distribuție Energie Electrică România (DEER), firmly refused a request for confidential information about available grid connection capacity for a renewable energy project, reportedly asking: “Did you come all the way from Constanța to ask me to do something illegal?”
According to the indictment issued by Romania’s Prosecutor General’s Office, investors seeking to develop photovoltaic, wind and energy storage projects wanted access to technical information identifying areas with available grid connection capacity. Such information would have helped them select and purchase suitable land for their investments.
During a meeting on 24 February 2026 in Balvanyos, Mihaela Suciu was approached by individuals interested in obtaining information about available capacity at DEER-operated substations. She refused to provide the requested data, citing its confidential nature and the lack of a lawful basis for disclosure.
Her testimony was reportedly supported by an audio-video recording made on 25 February 2026. Subsequent conversations cited in the indictment also described attempts to obtain the same information through other institutional contacts.
The case forms part of a wider investigation into alleged influence peddling and related corruption offences involving several individuals and attempts to secure preferential access and support for renewable energy investments.
The episode highlights the importance of transparency, equal treatment and compliance with legal procedures when accessing electricity grid connection data. Such information is essential for renewable energy developers but must be obtained exclusively through official channels.
All individuals mentioned in the investigation benefit from the presumption of innocence. The allegations remain subject to judicial examination.
