Romania lost more jobs in one month than during the 2008-2012 period, says CONAF

Since the beginning of the state of emergency and until now, Romania has lost over 1,000,000 jobs, more than the 700,000 jobs lost between 2008-2012, according to the Women’s Entrepreneurship Confederation (CONAF).

In the US, about one in ten employees, representing 16.8 million people, have lost their jobs in the last three weeks, amid the economic crisis generated by the coronavirus. Data represents the most lost jobs in the shortest period since 1948.

“These broad-spectrum data may not be able to convincingly express the disparities at present, but they illustrate the beginning of a new social order. The economic forecasts were overturned, adopting the optimistic scenario creating a relaxation of the economic reality and a lack of anticipation of the impact of coronavirus on the labor market in the most powerful country of the world,” said Cristina Chiriac, president of CONAF. “Therefore, if we look at the data in Romania, keeping the proportions, the impact of coronavirus is extremely large. The question remains whether, after the end of the pandemic, all these people will return to the field of work or at least some of them, especially since we will probably be attending a new settlement of the social classes.”
