CNR-CME, Electrica and ANRE organized debate on new electricity market model

    Published on

On January 29, CNR-CME, Electrica and ANRE organized the Conference “The New Model of the Electricity Market, generated by Regulation (EU) 2019/943 and Directive (EU) 2019/944”.

The energy system is currently undergoing a period of profound changes over the last decades, and the electricity market is at the centre of this process of change. The common goal of decarbonising the energy system creates new opportunities and challenges for market participants, and technological advances allow new forms of user participation and cross-border cooperation.

Regulation (EU) 2019/943 and Directive (EU) 2019/944 establish rules for ensuring the functioning of the internal market for electricity and include certain requirements related to the production of energy from renewable sources and environmental policy. The focus is on the specific rules for certain types of electricity generation installations from renewable sources, regarding the responsibility in the matter of balancing, dispatching and redistribution, as well as a threshold for CO2 emissions for the new generation capacity.

The main conclusions of the event highlighted the fact that the two EU documents concerning the internal electricity market pay special attention to the electricity consumer and must be applied within the deadlines set by the European documents, and the authorities must transpose them into the primary and secondary legislation.

It is also necessary to increase the share of the production of energy from renewable sources, correlated with the possibility of increasing the capacity of energy storage, the development of new technologies and of investments in the generation of electricity to provide flexibility, a term commonly used in the energy sector.
