Electrocentrale Borzești announced the commissioning of the first megawatt of energy from photovoltaic sources, 15 years after it had stopped its electricity production. The total investment in this project was around 30 million euros.

“The last day of electricity production with fuel oil as the raw material took place at Electrocentrale Borzești on 11.12.2009, so after 15 years, the object of activity remains the same, but the source is now a renewable one, representing an important step in the transition to a clean energy, for the future”, said Doru Voicu, Director of Strategy within Renovatio. “Electrocentrale Borzești will become the most important hub for renewable energies in Romania, with active exploitation of alternative resources with potential in the area.”

Renovatio, one of the main players in the field of solar energy and green technology in Romania, aims to complete the photovoltaic project at Electrocentrale Borzești at the end of April 2024, which will have an installed capacity of 50 MW.

The project provides for the installation of approximately 75,000 photovoltaic panels, with a production of 70,000 MWh/year, a quantity that could supply 350,000 household consumers for a year (with a monthly consumption of 200kWh).

In Borzești, another 50 MW will also be installed in wind power, and by the end of 2028, in Galați County, a total capacity of up to 1,000 MW will be developed. The funds of approximately 30 million euros needed to build the photovoltaic park in Borzești came from Renovatio’s own sources and from bank loans.

OMV Petrom recently signed the acquisition of a 50 percent stake in Electrocentrale Borzești from RNV Infrastructure. The transaction is currently being analyzed by the Competition Council.
