Alexandru Petrescu, ASF: “Romania’s capital market is moving ever closer to the international investment circuit”

    Published on

Romania’s capital market is continuing to strengthen its position within the global investment landscape, with the latest review by international index provider FTSE Russell confirming further progress, according to Alexandru Petrescu, President of Romania’s Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF).

Starting September 21, two additional companies listed on the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB) will be included in the FTSE Global All Cap Index, joining other Romanian companies already represented in the index.

“The semi-annual review carried out by the global index provider FTSE Russell brings further confirmation of the progress made by Romania’s capital market. Starting September 21, two new companies listed on the Bucharest Stock Exchange will be included in the FTSE Global All Cap index, alongside the other Romanian firms already present in this category,” Petrescu said.

He noted that the development is significant not only for the individual companies concerned, but also for the Romanian market as a whole.

“Beyond the individual outcome for each issuer, this development sends an important message about the maturing of the Romanian capital market,” the ASF president said.

According to Petrescu, inclusion in international indices demonstrates that Romanian issuers are increasingly able to meet demanding standards related to liquidity, transparency, corporate governance and accessibility for international institutional investors.

“The inclusion of new companies in international indices reflects the ability of local issuers to meet demanding criteria in terms of liquidity, transparency, corporate governance and accessibility for global institutional investors,” he said.

Following the latest additions, 10 Romanian companies will be represented in the FTSE Global All Cap Index, while another three issuers will be included in the FTSE Global Micro Cap Index.

“The presence of 10 Romanian companies in the FTSE Global All Cap and of a further three issuers in the FTSE Global Micro Cap marks a step forward in the process of integrating the Bucharest Stock Exchange into the international investment circuit,” Petrescu said.

The ASF president stressed that the development of the capital market should be assessed beyond short-term movements in share prices, pointing to its broader role in financing the economy.

“A developed capital market means more than the movement of share prices. It means mechanisms through which savings are turned into investment, through which companies can raise capital for growth, and through which local and international investors alike can take part in economic development,” Petrescu said.

The growing number of Romanian companies included in global indices also provides a broader signal of investor confidence, he added.

“The rising number of Romanian companies included in global indices is also a signal of confidence for the market as a whole,” Petrescu said.

Greater international visibility could help Romanian companies attract new categories of investors, diversify their financing sources and increase the role of the capital market in supporting economic growth.

“International visibility can help attract new categories of investors, diversify companies’ sources of financing and strengthen the role of the capital market as a strategic alternative for the development of the Romanian economy,” he added.

Petrescu emphasized that further development of the capital market remains an important objective for Romania as the country seeks to build a more competitive economy capable of combining domestic capital with international investment.

“For Romania, developing the capital market remains an important objective in building a more competitive economy, one in which domestic capital and international investment can contribute together to growth and innovation,” the ASF president concluded.
