Electrocentrale București (ELCEN) announced that, starting Monday, the Grozăvești Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Plant has resumed electricity generation with the restart of its cogeneration unit, supplying approximately 30 MW to Romania’s National Power System (SEN).
Until now, the Grozăvești CHP Plant had been operating exclusively in thermal energy production mode, providing domestic hot water through a Hot Water Boiler (HWB) under a summer operating scheme tailored to lower seasonal heat demand.
In addition to increasing electricity generation for the National Power System, the restart of the Grozăvești CHP Plant also ensures the production of thermal energy required by the Municipality of Bucharest:
- Grozăvești CHP Plant currently supplies approximately 40 Gcal for domestic hot water production.
- Bucharest South CHP Plant is also operating with a Hot Water Boiler (HWB), producing approximately 60 Gcal.
With a combined output of around 100 Gcal delivered to the district heating network, ELCEN fully and efficiently meets the current heat demand, which remains low during the summer period.
At the same time, ELCEN is carrying out the technical and operational preparations required to restart the Progresu CHP Plant by mid-August. This measure will further enhance the flexibility and reliability of both Bucharest’s district heating system and Romania’s National Power System.
“The declaration of a national energy alert places us in an extremely challenging situation, where every additional megawatt injected into the National Power System is crucial for preventing imbalances. ELCEN’s decision to restart the Grozăvești CHP Plant once again demonstrates the strategic role of our cogeneration facilities: not only in providing hot water to Bucharest residents, but also in strengthening Romania’s energy security. We are operating in line with current demand and remain fully prepared to respond promptly to the requests of the National Energy Dispatcher,” said the management of Electrocentrale București S.A. (ELCEN).
