“In the short term, our focus is on consolidating our network from Bucharest and other key regional airports (Timişoara, Iaşi, Cluj), strengthening both domestic and European routes. In the long term, we are committed to expanding our fleet to 18 Airbus aircraft by end of 2027, which will support our growth into new markets in Western Europe and the Middle East,” Marius Pandel, CEO AnimaWings told The Diplomat-Bucharest.

“Our goal is to position AnimaWings as a regional connector — bridging Romania, the Balkans, and major European hubs”

AnimaWings was launched in 2020 as a 100% Romanian airline. How would you describe the company’s mission and vision within the aviation industry?

AnimaWings was founded with the mission to connect Romania to the world through a network built on reliability, comfort, and a truly Romanian spirit of hospitality. Our vision is to become the preferred Romanian carrier for both domestic and international travelers, a company that represents national pride and modern efficiency in the European aviation landscape. We aim to offer passengers an experience that blends affordability with quality, emotion with professionalism.

What differentiates AnimaWings from other regional and European low-cost or full-service carriers?

AnimaWings is an airline offering full- service options. Even though, structured on a hybrid model — we combine the accessibility of affordable fares with the comfort and services of a full-service airline. We offer a full range of services from economy to premium economy and full business class on most of our routes. While the general trend is towards ultra-low cost models, we aim to redefine real aviation, with respect for passengers and the quality of services offered.

Our passengers can enjoy a modern fleet of Airbus aircraft, designed for a quieter, more spacious, and fuel-efficient experience. We also stand out through our local DNA: being 100% Romanian allows us to understand the needs, expectations, and travel habits of our passengers better than any foreign competitor.

What are the short-term and long-term development strategies for AnimaWings in the Romanian and international markets?

In the short term, our focus is on consolidating our network from Bucharest and other key regional airports (Timişoara, Iaşi, Cluj), strengthening both domestic and European routes. In the long term, we are committed to expanding our fleet to 18 Airbus aircraft by end of 2027, which will support our growth into new markets in Western Europe and the Middle East. Our goal is to position AnimaWings as a regional connector — bridging Romania, the Balkans, and major European hubs.

What criteria do you use when deciding to open new routes?

Our route development decisions are based on a combination of strategic, commercial, and operational criteria. We analyze passenger demand, business and leisure travel potential, diaspora traffic, and the competitive landscape. In parallel, we evaluate airport infrastructure and accessibility, operational efficiency, and partnership opportunities. Ultimately, every new route must strengthen our network connectivity and bring sustainable value to both the company and our passengers.

How is AnimaWings tailoring its onboard services and flight experience to meet the needs of Romanian travelers and international passengers?

We focus on offering a consistent, comfortable, and friendly onboard experience. Our Airbus aircraft are equipped with ergonomic seats, generous cabin space, and excellent fuel efficiency — which translates into both passenger comfort and environmental responsibility. We continuously refine our onboard services to reflect the preferences of our customers, offering flexibility in seat selection, luggage options, and premium add-ons such as priority boarding or special hot meals designed by Chef Alex Petricean and inspired by the Romanian traditional cuisine. Above all, our crews bring a genuine sense of Romanian warmth and hospitality to every flight.

How do you ensure competitive pricing while maintaining quality service?

Efficiency is at the core of our operations. The Airbus A220’s lower fuel consumption and optimized maintenance costs allow us to maintain competitive fares without compromising service quality. Additionally, our direct distribution channels and smart yield management help us balance affordability with financial sustainability. For us, competitive pricing doesn’t mean cutting corners — it means optimizing processes, leveraging technology, and ensuring every aspect of the journey adds value to the customer.

What are the company’s main objectives for the next three to five years?

Over the next five years, our objectives include expanding our fleet to 18 aircraft, opening new bases in Romania, and strengthening our European network. We also aim to join interline and code share agreements, to expand our product and visibility. Sustainability is another key priority — we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint through next-generation aircraft and efficient operational planning.

The aviation industry is highly competitive and capital-intensive. What are the biggest challenges AnimaWings faces right now?

Like many carriers, we face challenges linked to fuel price volatility, airport infrastructure limitations, and pilot shortages across Europe. However, our agility as a young airline allows us to adapt quickly. The key challenge is maintaining steady growth while ensuring operational excellence and customer satisfaction. We view these challenges not as obstacles, but as opportunities to innovate, optimize, and strengthen our business model.

If you were to describe the AnimaWings journey five years from now, what would success look like for you personally and for the company?

Success, for us, means having established AnimaWings as the airline of choice for Romanian travelers and an emerging regional player recognized for quality and reliability. Five years from now, I envision a network that spans key European and Middle Eastern cities, a strong domestic presence, and a loyal customer base that identifies with our brand values. Personally, success would be seeing a Romanian airline thriving internationally — proof that vision, courage, and consistency can build something remarkable in European aviation.
