Heineken joins forces with Engie Romania to accelerate local carbon reduction efforts

Heineken will work with Engie Romania to implement specialised technology and energy solutions, as part of the company’s decarbonization roadmap in all three local breweries, in Miercurea-Ciuc, Ungheni (Mures) and Craiova.

“Our partners bring us expertise in their field, knowledge of the best available technology solutions and an outside-in view of the problems we are trying to solve. These skills are paramount to helping Heineken Global in its ambitions to reach Net Zero in Scope 1 & 2 by 2030, which cannot be accomplished in isolation. Collaboration with experts is essential to reach our ambitions at the speed and scale we need” – Magne Setnes, Chief Supply Chain Officer of Heineken

“Our partnership with ENGIE allows us to take a great, important step in our Net Zero journey here in Romania. This has been a priority for us ever since HEINEKEN has announced its global ambition to decarbonize production. We are also very pleased that we have been able to access support from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) for our investment project” – Thibaut Boidin, Managing Director, Heineken Romania

“We are delighted to be Heineken’s partner of choice for providing complex integrated and turnkey decarbonization solutions for three of our customer’s industrial sites. We proposed an end-to-end approach, from strategy to execution, consisting of innovative solutions and technologies to decarbonize heat production and usage. Our strategy combines onsite biomethane production, resulted from craft breweries’ waste and heat recovery through heat pumps. This customized approach will contribute to Heineken’s global Net Zero ambitions.” – Nicolas Richard, CEO Engie Romania

The Integrated Net Zero Production programme was launched to help tackle the 88% of Heineken’s global Scope 1 and 2 emissions that come from beverage production, with the aim of establishing a cross-functional team of internal experts and external suppliers to drive progress.
