Iohannis: Romania recognizes Juan Guaido as interim President of Venezuela

    Published on

Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis, as Romania’s foreign policy decision-maker and as Romania’s representative at external level, in agreement with the constitutional provisions, decided to recognise Juan Guaido as interim President of Venezuela, the Presidential Administration points out.

The quoted source shows that the Romanian President’s decision was made “following a careful analysis of the situation, including from a political-diplomatic and judicial point of view, and in the context in which the majority of the EU member states and a series of important allies and partners of our country in the Euro-Atlantic space recognised the legitimacy of the interim President Juan Guaido,” Agerpres reads.

According to the Presidential Administration, President Iohannis believes that “especially in the context in which Romania is holding the EU Council Presidency and taking into account the increased dynamics of international developments, Romania must have fast, well-founded and firm responses in the foreign policy files, in agreement with the major foreign policy priorities which it consistently pursued in the long run.”

The quoted source mentioned to have requested ever since Monday, immediately after the informal meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers of the EU member states (Gymnich) held in Bucharest, “the urgent transfer of some assessment elements regarding this topic and a clear proposal regarding Romania’s standpoint to the Presidential Administration, including from a political-diplomatic and judicial point of view, regarding the possibility of recognising Juan Guaido as interim President of Venezuela, namely the legitimacy of his actions and of the National Assembly.”
