Romania’s National Electricity Transmission Company, Transelectrica, today held discussions with local authorities in Botoșani County on the progress of strategic investments aimed at developing energy infrastructure in the north of the country: the Romanian section of the Suceava–Bălți 400 kV overhead power line and the Botoșani electrical substation.
With the preliminary stages completed and the process of obtaining the building permit now underway, construction of the Romanian section of the Suceava–Bălți 400 kV overhead power line could begin by early 2027 at the latest.
The discussions focused on the preparation status of two major projects for the regional energy system: the Romanian section of the Suceava–Bălți 400 kV overhead power line and the Botoșani Sud 400/110 kV substation. Both investments are at an advanced stage of preparation, and continued cooperation with the authorities and institutions involved is essential to completing the remaining steps before construction begins.
The Suceava–Bălți 400 kV overhead power line is a strategic project aimed at strengthening Romania’s electricity transmission infrastructure and developing regional interconnections. The investment will connect the electricity systems of Romania and the Republic of Moldova, strengthen Moldova’s integration into the European ENTSO-E network, and contribute to closing the national 400 kV transmission grid ring.
On Romanian territory, the power line will extend for 93.3 kilometres and cross 17 administrative-territorial units, including six in Suceava County and 11 in Botoșani County.
The investment is valued at RON 133.4 million, excluding VAT. The design and construction contract was signed on 11 March 2025 with the consortium comprising Electromontaj SA and ELM Electromontaj Cluj SA, led by Electromontaj SA. The construction period is 36 months, in accordance with the contractual provisions and the project’s implementation stages.
