Transelectrica has signed the design and execution contract for the “Pilot Project: The rehabilitation the Alba Iulia 220/110/20 kV Substation as a Digital Substation”; the project kick-off meeting took place today, attended by Transelectrica’s management and team, the Vodafone Romania – Electromontaj SA Consortium, and representatives of the National University of Science and Technology Politehnica Bucharest.

The contract value is 476 million RON (excluding VAT), approximately 90.44 million euros. The project benefits from non-refundable funding of 228 million RON from the Modernisation Fund, and the design and execution contract has a duration of 44 months, with completion scheduled for May 2030.

The project is designed as a pilot for developing an integrated digital substation model within the Electricity Transmission Network, where energy infrastructure is connected with digital infrastructure, communications, data, cybersecurity, and asset condition monitoring and analysis of the condition of the assets.

The concepts developed and implemented in the Alba Iulia project integrate a digital substation and modern automation and monitoring systems into a single ecosystem; a telecommunications infrastructure and private cloud; GIS (Geospatial Information System) and satellite data; Digital Twin and augmented reality; an Asset Health Center and solutions for monitoring and assessing technical condition; integrated cybersecurity; photovoltaic generation and e-mobility solutions; as well as a learning platform for training and knowledge validation. The purpose is for these components to function in an integrated manner, rather than as independent technological solutions.
