Transelectrica officially inaugurated today, May 26, 2026, the completion of the new 400 kV Reșița electrical transformation substation and the modernization of the existing 220/110 kV Reșița substation in Caraș-Severin County. The investment, worth RON 175.9 million (excluding VAT), was fully financed from the company’s own sources.
The works were carried out by a consortium formed by Siemens Energy SRL (leader), Electrogrup SA, Retrasib SA, subcontractor Energotech, and Dacom Impex SRL.
The project included the construction of a new 400 kV substation and the complete modernization of the existing 220/110 kV voltage levels. The Reșița substation represents a key node in western Romania’s 400 kV energy corridor — the Banat Axis — ensuring electricity transit between Portile de Fier, Reșița, Timișoara, and Arad.
At the same time, several other projects are currently underway, at different stages of development, to complete the transition to the 400 kV voltage level along the Iron Gates – Reșița – Timișoara – Săcălaz – Arad axis.
Ștefăniță Munteanu, CEO of Transelectrica, stated: “In recent years, Transelectrica has implemented and continues to implement investments totalling more than RON 600 million in western Romania to ensure the stability of the national power system in this region, the safety and continuity of electricity supply, the increase by 1,000 MW of grid connection capacity for both new large consumers and new power producers, and the increase of cross-border exchange capacity with neighbouring Serbia, which has now reached up to 1,000 MW.
These are massive investments that required engineering excellence, hard work, determination, and perseverance to overcome all encountered challenges and turn them into reality. And they have become reality: the 400 kV Reșița–Pančevo interconnection line, the 400 kV Iron Gates–Anina–Reșița transmission line — one of the most spectacular and challenging energy infrastructure projects — and the Reșița electrical transformation substation, which placed Reșița on the map of the 400 kV ‘energy highway’ and interconnection nodes.
We are currently working intensively on the 400 kV transmission corridor that will soon connect Reșița to Timișoara on the new Banat 400 kV Axis, extending from Reșița to Timișoara/Săcălaz and further to Arad. This project is financed through the Modernisation Fund and forms part of Romania’s western 400 kV ring.
Transelectrica is a truly strategic company for the Romanian state. The company’s investments open the door to economic development at national level. Recently, the General Shareholders’ Meeting approved an investment budget of RON 914 million for this year, 30% higher than last year. And the pace will continue to accelerate. Our objective is to progressively reach annual investments of up to RON 1.3 billion over the coming years.”
The 400/220/110 kV Reșița substation plays a strategic role within Romania’s electricity transmission network, directly contributing to improved operational security of the National Power System and stronger regional interconnections.
The investment is part of Phase I of the broader development and modernization program for the 400 kV energy corridor in western Romania — the Banat Axis — supported, among others, through the Modernisation Fund. The initiative will strengthen western Romania’s energy infrastructure and reinforce integration with the European ENTSO-E network.
