Transelectrica completed an investment program worth approximately RON 691 million in 2025 to modernize and upgrade the national electricity transmission network. For 2026, the company has proposed an investment budget of RON 914 million, more than 30% higher than the level achieved in 2025.
Total investment spending in 2025 reached RON 691.05 million, up from RON 665.7 million in 2024 and significantly above the RON 471.95 million recorded in 2023.
The proposed investment program for 2026 exceeds RON 914 million, while projections for 2027 and 2028 indicate a strong upward trend. According to the company, this trajectory highlights a sustained investment effort and an acceleration of the systemic modernization of Romania’s transmission grid.
Major investment projects launched or continued in 2025 include:
- Modernization and upgrade to 400 kV of the Stâlpu and Teleajen substations, crucial for transmitting energy from Dobrogea to Muntenia
- Development of the 400 kV Suceava–Bălți overhead line, strengthening Moldova’s integration into the ENTSO-E grid and improving regional energy security
- Reinforcement of the southwest transmission corridor through projects such as 400 kV Timișoara–Arad and modernization of the Iron Gates–Reșița–Timișoara–Arad axis
- Construction of the 220 kV Ostrovu Mare substation in Mehedinți County
- Installation of solar power plants and battery storage systems to supply internal services in 29 substations, reducing costs and emissions
- Deployment of SMART GRID solutions and online monitoring systems for high-voltage lines
These investments are expected to facilitate the integration of renewable energy in Dobrogea and Banat, where an additional 5,000 MW of capacity is projected to become available by 2027.
Among the most significant projects finalized last year were:
- Modernization of the 220 kV and 110 kV levels at Reșița substation and construction of the new 400 kV Reșița station
- Completion of the double-circuit 220 kV Ostrovu Mare overhead line
- Completion of the first STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) installation in Romania’s transmission grid, at Sibiu Sud substation
- Phased implementation of intelligent line monitoring systems under a Modernisation Fund project focused on optimizing existing 400 kV lines linked to the Cernavodă nuclear plant and renewable generation in Dobrogea
Transelectrica’s 10-year Transmission Grid Development Plan focuses on large-scale investments in energy security, digitalization, and smart grids. These projects are intended to increase renewable integration capacity, expand cross-border interconnections, and strengthen Romania’s position in the European energy sector.
