PPC Renewables Romania develops a 60 MW battery energy storage system at the Târgușor wind farm

    Published on

PPC Renewables Romania, the largest private investor in renewable energy in Romania, continues to expand its portfolio of hybrid capacities and will build, as part of the Zephyr 1 project (CEE Târgușor), a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 60 MW / 120 MWh. The project has a total value of 129.9 million lei, of which 14.36 million lei will be provided through European financing via the Modernization Fund.

The project continues PPC Renewables Romania’s plan to expand its renewable energy portfolio with storage projects that can actively contribute to system stability through the predictable production profile enabled by battery energy storage.

This is the third storage project announced by PPC Renewables Romania and marks the acceleration of the company’s storage portfolio development. Over the course of this year, PPC Renewables Romania plans to add new storage capacities and is rapidly advancing in this segment, alongside the expansion of renewable energy production, as it approaches the 2 GW milestone in Romania.

Located in the South-East Region, Nicolae Bălcescu administrative unit, Constanța County, the BESS system will be implemented at the Zephyr 1 (CEE Târgușor) wind farm, which includes 52 turbines with a total installed power of 120 MW. In the same area, the two wind farms Târgușor and Nicolae Bălcescu Târgușor, also known as Zephyr 1 and Zephyr 2, comprise 78 wind turbines with a total installed power of 180 MW.

Alongside the development of the storage system, the project involves completing all necessary construction and infrastructure elements, arranging operational roads and access routes, fencing the site, implementing safety lighting and monitoring systems, as well as building the area intended for operations, maintenance, and site logistics.

The project benefits from financing through the Modernization Fund – Supporting investments in the development of electricity storage capacities (batteries) connected to an existing renewable energy production installation. The investment amounts to a total value of 129,926,844.35 lei. The maximum amount provided through the Modernization Fund is 11.05% of eligible costs, representing 14,360,696.06 lei, while the contribution from PPC Renewables Romania is 115,566,148.29 lei.
