Auchan Romania is strengthening its transition to green energy by accelerating the integration of renewable sources into its operations. The retailer has reached approximately 60% renewable energy usage across 40 locations—including Auchan and ATAC hypermarkets and supermarkets, as well as its Bucharest headquarters—through energy supplied by Auchan Renewable Energy (ARE). This milestone aligns with the company’s goal of 100% renewable energy by 2030.
The shift to green energy stems from a phased approach that began with major investments in on-site renewable production. Auchan Romania installed extensive rooftop solar panels on its stores, directly cutting reliance on external sources and optimizing energy use.
As part of this effort, the retailer established Auchan Renewable Energy (ARE) in early 2023 to purchase and supply energy to Auchan sites. Starting in June 2025, Auchan began supplying energy traded directly through ARE, progressively expanding the network. By March 2026, it covers 40 locations nationwide, including stores in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara, Brasov, Iasi, Constanța, Craiova, Galati, Oradea, Pitești, Sibiu, Bacău, and Suceava.
“The rapid expansion of Auchan Renewable Energy shows that energy can be a strategic pillar in retail operations,” said Cristian Drăghici, Director of Auchan Renewable Energy. “By combining our own production with an integrated purchasing and supply model, we’re not only boosting the share of renewables but also gaining better control over consumption and costs. Reaching 40 locations in under a year proves this model’s ability to scale efficiently nationwide.”
