2025 was one of the most important years in Orange Romania’s recent history, especially in terms of innovation. By the end of the year, the operator had expanded its 5G/5G+ coverage to 88 cities and extended its latest-generation fiber optic network to approximately 4.5 million households.
The expansion of 5G/5G+ technology is one of the most important drivers of innovation in telecommunications. It represents not only higher speeds and wider coverage but also a way to support the digitalization of many communities, foster smart city development, and improve efficiency across multiple industries.
5G offers speeds up to ten times faster than 4G, enabling rapid file transfers, near-instant loading of applications, websites, and smart home devices, and more stable, higher-quality video streaming. In the long term, it supports smart homes, environmental sensors, intelligent utility metering, traffic monitoring and optimization, and solutions in education, healthcare, energy, and electric mobility.
Additionally, 5G/5G+ enables high-speed, low-latency private networks that can significantly improve automated production facilities and smart factories.
In 2025, Orange Romania extended 5G/5G+ coverage to 88 cities, including Bârlad, Buzău, Câmpia Turzii, Câmpina, Câmpulung, Caracal, Comănești, Dej, Fetești, Mediaș, Moinești, Onești, Pașcani, Rădăuți, Râmnicu Sărat, Roman, Slatina, Slobozia, Târgu Jiu, Turda, the Prahova Valley resorts (Azuga, Bușteni, Predeal, Sinaia), Vaslui, and Zalău. Coverage also reached 100% in Timișoara.
A major digitalization milestone was achieved in the Danube Delta, one of Romania’s most remote regions. Through the 5G Connect Danube Delta project launched in 2024, Orange introduced 5G Standalone (SA) technology for the first time in Romania.
This independent 5G core network enables better traffic efficiency and is supported by a local processing node and dedicated Edge Cloud servers, reducing latency and improving performance for local applications.
The project focuses on social impact, targeting four key areas: digital education, telemedicine, slow tourism, and environmental monitoring. It is supported by the European Commission through the Connecting Europe Facility program.
The transition to 5G and modern fiber also improves sustainability. 5G/5G+ is up to ten times more energy-efficient than previous technologies for the same traffic levels. Modern networks can enter energy-saving modes during low usage.
Another significant initiative was the gradual decommissioning of copper networks and their replacement with fiber. Additionally, 90% of Orange Romania’s electricity consumption now comes from renewable sources.
According to the latest ANCOM Netograf study, Orange remained Romania’s fastest mobile network, with average download speeds of 95 Mbps, and also the fastest fixed network, with 558 Mbps average speeds. LCC International renewed Orange’s certification as the country’s best mobile network, and additional testing services confirmed Orange as the fastest mobile and fiber network in January 2026.
“Looking back at 2025, we managed to exceed our network expansion and new technology targets. We are pleased that our efforts are once again recognized by external auditors. We will continue supporting Romanians’ personal and professional development needs, families’ connectivity and online safety requirements, and the creation of creative and entrepreneurial local communities. At the same time, we aim to provide Romanian businesses with comprehensive connectivity, IT&C, cloud, cybersecurity, and integration services to help them grow in an increasingly complex digital world. This year, Orange Romania will continue expanding its mobile networks, following our record €265 million investment in 5G spectrum, while also improving our fiber infrastructure to bring the fastest fixed internet to as many cities as possible,” said Marius Maican, Technology Director, Orange Romania.
