Viorel Tudose, Getica 95: “The independence of prosumers must not endanger national energy security”

“The energy strategy of a country is very simple. You have to know macroeconomics to do it. When the Green Deal came out, we had to see how we replace coal-based energy production with something else. We developed the part of energy production from renewable sources, especially photovoltaic projects, and the famous prosumers appeared, but no one predicted that, although consumption would decrease a lot and we have cheap energy around lunchtime, the prosumers are not at home to consume this energy and we do not have energy storage solutions and we find ourselves having to import somewhere between 2,800 and 3,000 MW in the evening,” Viorel Tudose, CEO Getica 95 said at Energy CEO Forum organized by The Diplomat-Bucharest.
Key statements:
- We must tell the truth about prosumers, about the risks they bring to the distribution networks. We must no longer shy away from the truth.
- Romania’s energy strategy must have a consumer education component, it must teach consumers what it means to be sustainable and how they can have a very good price for energy. If they want a very good price for energy, a consumer must be educated. We have no education among consumers.
- We have short-term plans and we lack a long-term strategy. We blame the “smart guys” in energy who must become “correct guys”.
- An energy strategy is not made for 5-10 years. A hydroelectric power plant is refurbished in 5-6 years. In this case, an energy strategy must be made for at least 25 years. We must also take into account the electrical networks. Everything in energy must be resized.
- The prosumer must be independent, but he must also be educated. The independence of prosumers must not endanger national energy security. The independence of prosumers can destroy the energy security of Romania.
