Ministry of Energy launches call for identification of perimeters in the Black Sea intended for wind energy production

The Ministry of Energy announces the launch of a public call for expressions of interest regarding the study to identify and delimit the perimeters in the Black Sea that can be concessioned for the development of offshore wind farms.
According to a press release from the ministry, the study has as its ultimate objective the support of the development of an installed capacity of offshore wind energy of at least 3 GW by 2035, in line with the targets assumed by Romania at European level.
“The Black Sea is a strategic energy resource for our country, which we have exploited too little so far, but which can become an essential pillar of national and regional energy security. During my mandate, I have prioritized investments in the Black Sea, with the aim of diversifying and consolidating the energy mix, so that Romania becomes the energy leader that our region needs. Through the production of gas from the Neptun Deep perimeter and the production of electricity from offshore wind perimeters, with a total theoretical potential of 76GW according to the World Bank study, the Romanian energy system becomes more secure and contributes to increasing the competitiveness and resilience of the national economy. This call launched by the Ministry of Energy is part of the construction of a new energy architecture for our country,” said the Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja.
He added that the study will form the basis of strategic decisions on the concession of offshore perimeters and will provide investors with a clear vision, scientifically substantiated and in accordance with the best international practices.
The study will analyse the wind potential in the Black Sea, the geotechnical characteristics of the marine environment, the environmental impact and biodiversity, the possibilities of connection to the National Energy System, but also the compatibility with other uses of the maritime space – such as navigation, fishing, extraction or military areas, the Ministry of Energy states.
