METRO Romania continues its multichannel, multi – customer transformation through a strategic investment in logistics infrastructure: a food delivery (Food Service Delivery – FSD) facility developed in Ștefăneștii de Jos, in partnership with WDP. The project, valued at €19.6 million, covers 12,000 sqm and is integrated into the company’s 65,000 sqm central platform.
The inauguration of the new warehouse took place in the presence of METRO AG CEO, Dr.Steffen Greubel. In his opening remarks, he stated: “In the recent years, Romania has been one of the most successful countries in the METRO Group, not only in financial performance, but also in terms of innovation and setting new directions for other countries in the METRO family. METRO Romania is both a model and an inspiration for the Group’s current strategy, with many of the elements developed here being exported to other countries where we operate. We are ready to continue investing in Romania, with plans worth hundreds of millions of euros by 2030. We are prepared to invest in Romania’s economic future and to build new infrastructure, but as an international company we need a climate of trust and predictability.”
The event also featured remarks by Mr. Laurențiu Gâdei, State Secretary within the Ministry of Economy, Entrepreneurship, Digitalization and Tourism; H.E. Ms. Angela Ganninger, Ambassador of Germany to Romania; Mr. Nicolae Bociu, State Secretary and President of ANSVSA; Mr. Sebastian Metz, CEO of AHK Romania (Romanian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry); and Mr. George Bădescu, Executive Director of AMRCR (Romanian Retailers’ Association).
The new facility is designed to strengthen one of the most dynamic business lines – deliveries to the food service sector – and directly addresses the growing demand from Romanian customers: independent resellers, HoReCa entrepreneurs, the country’s largest independent franchise, LaDoiPași and the continuously growing network of LaDoiPasi Extra stores.
“This investment is more than just an expansion of logistics infrastructure. It is a firm commitment to our customers and a confirmation of METRO’s role as a trusted partner for independent businesses in Romania,” said Karan Khurana, CEO of METRO Romania.
With 26 regional distribution centers, supported by the central hub near Bucharest (One Roof, of 65.000 sqm) and the platforms in Reșița and Slobozia, METRO Romania ensures nationwide deliveries every day through a fleet of more than 300 trucks, serving over 11,000 customers. The activity is backed by a dedicated team of 500 professionals, the delivery fleet collectively travelling more than 40,000 km each year to guarantee on-time deliveries.

METRO’s portfolio for the newly launched FSD Depot includes over 11,500 products – from fresh to frozen, from ambient to refrigerated – all offered with stable prices, consistent quality, and operational efficiency.
“The new Food Service Delivery warehouse brings to customers in Bucharest, Ilfov and the adjacent areas of the capital more predictable deliveries, safer stock availability, and quality preserved throughout the cold chain, within efficient and sustainable operations. It is also a hub of expertise where we train specialists and build careers, not just jobs. Romania also plays a strategic role in the region, as a starting point for expanding FSD capacities and for further integrating delivery, stores, and the franchise into a single customer experience,” emphasized Adrian Ariciu, Executive Vice President Cluster East METRO AG.
“Beyond logistics, warehouses, or trucks, the decisive factor remains people. We invest for people, for independent businesses, and to build a stronger future together,” added Karan Khurana, CEO of METRO Romania.
The company expressed its gratitude to partner WDP for their trust and collaboration, to the METRO Romania team for their expertise and dedication, as well as to the customers and partners present at the inauguration.
Adrian Ariciu also addressed Romanian authorities: “None of this works without collaboration. When business and institutions maintain constant dialogue, progress is faster. We will continue to engage transparently in food safety, traceability, and consumer protection, while from public policy we expect stable rules, clear implementation, and timely decisions.”
