Hidroelectrica has launched the procurement procedure for the design, supply, and installation of mechanical and electrical equipment for the Nehoiașu II Hydropower Plant, as well as for the expansion of the 110 kV transformer station within the Surduc–Siriu Hydropower Development. The project represents one of the company’s strategic investments aimed at developing renewable energy generation capacity and strengthening Romania’s energy security.
The contract, estimated at approximately EUR 49.5 million (excluding VAT), will be awarded as a turnkey project and will include design, manufacturing, delivery, installation, testing, commissioning, and training of operational personnel. The estimated implementation period is 44 months, and the project will be carried out at the Surduc–Siriu Hydropower Development, located across the Buzău, Vrancea, and Covasna counties.
“The launch of this procedure marks an important milestone in our development strategy and in our efforts to harness Romania’s hydropower potential. The Nehoiașu II Hydropower Plant, part of the Surduc–Siriu Development, will contribute to increasing renewable generation capacity, improving the flexibility of the National Energy System, and strengthening Hidroelectrica’s role as the country’s main producer of green energy. We continue to invest in strategic projects and in the development, diversification, and hybridization of our portfolio to ensure the transition toward a sustainable energy system,” stated Bogdan Badea, CEO of Hidroelectrica.
The investment covers the installation of a complete hydro unit, including the turbine, generator, automation and protection systems, auxiliary hydromechanical equipment, as well as the expansion of the 110 kV electrical substation, integration of SCADA systems, and security and communication infrastructure. The project will contribute to enhancing system flexibility, improving balancing capabilities, and maximizing the hydropower potential of the Buzău River.
The Surduc–Siriu Hydropower Development is one of the most important investment projects in Hidroelectrica’s portfolio, and the completion of Nehoiașu II is essential for finalizing the entire Surduc–Nehoiașu cascade and increasing the company’s renewable energy production.
The procurement procedure will use the “best quality–price ratio” award criterion, with the evaluation considering guaranteed technical parameters, equipment performance, and warranty conditions, alongside the financial offer.
Hidroelectrica is the largest producer of renewable energy in Romania, managing a portfolio of 188 hydropower plants with a total capacity of 6.4 GW, as well as the Crucea wind farm, which has an installed capacity of 108 MW. The company also ranks first nationally among electricity suppliers in terms of customer portfolio size.
