Romania could reach 6.5 GW of installed wind capacity by 2028, of which 3 new GW are expected in the next three years, according to data presented by RWEA (Romanian Wind Energy Association).
“We are witnessing a new generation of projects – with turbines with a capacity three times higher than those installed 15 years ago – that make a crucial contribution to energy stability and security, offering a clean, affordable and complementary source of solar energy. In Europe, installed capacity has reached 1.1 TW, and projects in various stages of development are taking us towards 2 TW by 2030.
The wind industry already supports over 400,000 direct jobs, plus hundreds of thousands in related sectors – from cable and bearing production to specialized components – thus contributing to a circular and sustainable economy,” said Liviu Gavrilă, Vice President of RWEA.
On June 16, over 150 participants (students, authorities, local community members, media representatives and energy experts) visited one of the largest wind farms under construction in Romania: VIFOR, developed by Rezolv Energy, in Buzău County.
Phase 1 is financed with EUR 291 million by a consortium of eight financial institutions, including Erste Group, UniCredit, EBRD, IFC, Intesa Sanpaolo, OTP Bank, Raiffeisen Bank International AG and Garanti BBVA Romania. The project is also supported by five PPA contracts with international companies such as T-Mobile Czech Republic, Slovak Telekom and Bekaert.
“We are proud to host Wind Open Day 2025, organized by RWEA – at VIFOR and to show the progress we have made. Education and dialogue are essential to build Romania’s energy future – and this event is an ideal opportunity to share knowledge and best practices.” said Alastair Hammond, CEO of Rezolv Energy.
“Romania has huge potential to expand its presence in wind energy in the coming years. At Vestas, we are delighted to collaborate with Rezolv and other partners to install and maintain the latest technology – especially now with VIFOR, which will become one of the wind farms with the largest turbines installed in the country.” said Cosimo Cannella, Head of Customer Project Execution East Europe, Vestas.
The project will generate up to 300 jobs during the construction phase and will bring significant economic benefits in the long term. At the same time, Rezolv will actively invest in the educational and social component, through partnerships that will transform the area into an example of integration between industry, community and vocational training.
