Ministry of Transport: Projects under Transport Master Plan worth EUR 14.9 billion

The total worth of the projects under Romanian Transport Master Plan is EUR 14.9 billion in market prices, throughout 2020, with the projects for roads and railroads making up 90 per cent of the total costs in such scenario, reads the document posted on the website of the Transport Ministry.

"The railway sector makes up 45 per cent of the total updated costs, while roads have a slightly smaller weigh of just 44 per cent. The remaining 10 per cent of the costs are ports, navigable ways and air transport projects."

As far as the project benefits are concerned, most of them will be for the road users, both passenger and cargo transport (73 percent), railway users (13 percent), ports and cargo carriers on navigable ways (13 per cent), according to the document.

"It should be noticed that the project benefits extend beyond the main means of transportation envisaged by a given project. For instance, the upgrading of railway services (a project that is mainly aimed at the railways) will generate benefits for users of railway transportation. But that could lead to passenger transfer and freight transportation transfer from roads to railways, thus reducing traffic jams and generating benefits for those continuing to use road transportation," the document explains.

The Transport Ministry has looked into 530 transport infrastructure projects to be proposed for testing under the General Transport Master Plan, with 246 of them being formable, the ministry reported in a recent press release.

As far as the value of formable projects is concerned using a national transport model under the first version of the General Transport Master Plan, which implementation time horizon was 2030, it was standing at EUR 325 million on average per project.
