Romania to be allowed to export gas
April 2013 - From the Print Edition
A ban on gas exports was lifted by a joint order by the Ministry of Economy, the National Regulatory Authority for Energy (ANRE) and the National Agency for Mineral Resources (NAMR) in early March, according to HotNews.ro. The order repeals an earlier one from 2011 which required operators to deliver the entire gas quantity of domestic production on the Romanian market.
Theoretically, gas exports could now begin, but pundits cite technical problems: Romania has one gas pipeline connected to Hungary (Arad-Szeged), which at the moment can only import, and two other connections to Bulgaria (Giurgiu-Ruse) and Moldova (Ungheni-Iasi), which are in the project phase. However, another export procedure could help Romania away from the physical transport of the gas. "Physically, the gas cannot be exported, because there is no pipeline, but on paper, it can," former economy minister Daniel Chitoiu told HotNews last year. "If anyone wants to export, they can draw up the export bill, but the gas will go from another state to the beneficiary."
