Justice takes a month-long holiday

Dissatisfied by shrinking salaries, Romania’s magistrates have been striking for a month, blocking the nation’s justice system and holding up the activity of 10,000 of companies. Prosecutors and judges were angry at a new law on salaries, reducing their basic wage by 35 per cent. However all magistrates benefit from bonuses for stress and confidentiality, which can increase their salaries up to an extra 65 per cent. The judiciary has been highly criticised by political parties and President Basescu. “Magistrates have been asked to guarantee the free access of Romanians to justice and seem to have forgotten,” said Basescu.
