Referendum on hold until next year
July 2013 - From the Print Edition
The Constitutional Court has ruled that the amendment to the Referendum Law, which lowers the threshold at which referendum results are valid to 30 percent, is constitutional insofar it does not apply to the referendums organized within one year of the entry into force of the law, according to Mediafax. Following this decision, National Liberal Party (PNL) leader Crin Antonescu said that a decision regarding the date of the referendum on the revision of the Constitution would be taken by the Social Liberal Union (USL). He added that all options were open, including the postponement of the referendum until next year. Prime Minister Victor Ponta said that organizing a referendum for the revision of the Constitution simultaneously with the first round of the presidential elections next year was currently the most rational option. On May 29, the Chamber of Deputies passed with 221 votes "for", 73 votes "against" and two abstentions the draft law on lowering the referendum attendance threshold to 30 percent.
