Social Democrat Swoboda voices concerns over independence of local justice
The Austrian leader of the Social Democrat group in the European Parliament, Hannes Swoboda, recently told national newswire Agerpres that Romania had shown solid effort and improvement since it joined the European Union in 2007, especially regarding the fight against corruption 2014-02-02 18:04:25 - From the Print Edition
However, there are still concerns over the independence of justice in Romania. The statement came in the context of the recently published report on the cooperation and verification mechanism (CVM).
Quoted by the newswire, the Austrian deputy said that the cooperation and verification mechanism was not intended to highlight the progress made by Romania and Bulgaria but to point to the "weaknesses" in those areas where greater efforts should be made, in order to prevent long-lasting negative effects.
The College of Commissioners has decided to start two new infringement actions against Romania for not fulfilling its internal affairs duties, namely in justice, fundamental rights and citizenship, as well as the progress of two actions in transport, according to officials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Romania.
