Unemployment rate in Romania below EU average

With a 6.9 per cent unemployment rate in October 2012, Romania has the sixth lowest unemployment rate among EU member states, according to Eurostat data. The European average stood at 11.7 per cent, with the lowest rates being recorded in Austria (4.3 per cent), Luxemburg (5.1 per cent) the Netherlands (5.5 per cent) while the highest rates were registered in Spain (26.2 per cent) and Greece (25.4 per cent in August). Compared with a year ago, the greatest increases were registered in Greece (from 18.4 per cent to 25.4 per cent), Cyprus (9.2 per cent to 12.9 per cent), Spain (22.7 per cent to 26.2 per cent) and Portugal (13.7 per cent to 16.3 per cent). In Romania the unemployment rate was 7.4 per cent in 2011.
