Ministry puts 20,000 state flats on market

COUNCIL FLAT SALE The Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism (MDRT) will put up for sale homes built by the state’s National Housing Agency (ANL) for low income citizens at prices between 19,000 and 36,000 Euro

March 2010 - From the Print Edition

The apartments were available for sale before, but the prices have now been reduced to construction costs, instead of the market price previously established by local councils.
The Ministry is trying to sell around 20,000 dwellings as soon as possible to attract 500 million Euro to the budget, which can then be invested in new housing developments.
Anyone can purchase the units eligible, but the sitting tenants have the first priority.
According to the new law, tenants can buy the flats after paying the rent for one year – reduced from the previous threshold of three years.
The purchasers of the apartments will not be allowed to sell the dwellings for five years after the sale.
A one-room state-built apartment covering a space of between 40 and 50 sqm will cost a customer around 19,000 Euro, while a three room apartment with a total area around 70 sqm will cost around 36,000 Euro.
