Healthcare to go bust by June
March 2010 - From the Print Edition
Romania’s healthcare system will run out of money by the end of June this year. The 3.66 billion Euro state budget for Romania’s ‘public’ healthcare system for 2010 will only cover the expenses for the first six months of the year. In 2009 the budget from National Insurance House (CNAS) to provide services for patients stood at 3.77 billion Euro, but this covered the expenses for only nine months. To prop up the system between October and December 2009, CNAS had to use funds for the 2010 budget. The financial crisis and rising unemployment has hit the healthcare budget. Meanwhile another key problem is the unbalance between users and contributors. Only 23 per cent of the state healthcare system’s beneficiaries are paying national health insurance, according to pharma market research company CEGEDIM.
