Opinion AmCham Romania: A Romania country project must include the business community

AmCham Romania is closely monitoring initiatives to elaborate a Romania Country Project, as AmCham has constantly advocated during the past years for defining and adopting a multi-generational country model to project Romania’s future economic development that following a broad consultation process should set the role and place that Romania will achieve only through coherent efforts to increase its economic competitiveness.

2016-09-23 11:32:31

"We welcome the recent Government and Presidency ventures in this respect, and we take this opportunity to briefly present AmCham Romania′s view on the structure and process flow that such project needs in order to stand out from previous attempts.

To begin with, the broad endorsement that such a project needs can be secured by inviting all relevant parties in the process. A country project built around economic desideratum cannot be elaborated without the participation of the business community that, along with representatives of the political parties, administration, academia, civil society, diaspora, unions, and even of the cultural and artistic realms, will provide a relevant mix of expertise and diversity in approaching potential growth paths for Romania. The business community has the experience of being part in the public-private dialogue and we believe it will be a valuable contributor to formulating a coherent strategy.

The support and interest at the business community level, correlated with the opennes of the authorities create a momentum which must not be lost, for launching such a process on functional basis, however, for a long term impact and successful implementation, the methodology to be used is not of lesser importance.

While we acknowledge the Presidency for taking the lead in launching this project, which is in line with former AmCham recommendations, we emphasize that in AmCham view, the process facilitation involves encompassing all relevant stakeholders in a society, so that each party will be able to contribute to shaping the country project vision and implementation. Experiences of countries that took on a similar path confirm that this is the only way to ensure a legitimate representativity and a broad, cross party, multi-sectorial endorsement of Romania's strategic positioning.

AmCham Romania remains a strong advocate of the country project objective and hereby expresses its further openness to be part in the Romania Country Project and to provide authorities specific recommendations for conducting such a complex, yet highly needed transformational process."
