Transgaz and Ukrtransgaz sign interconnection agreement

Romanian National Gas Transmission Company Transgaz and the Natural Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine-Ukrtransgaz signed the Interconnection Agreement for the Interconnection Point Isaccea located at the Ukrainian-Romanian border, informs a Ukrtransgaz release citied by national newswire Agerpres.

2016-07-22 13:01:00

The agreement has been signed in order to facilitate cross-border gas flows and provide free and non-discriminatory access to the natural gas transmission infrastructure on Wednesday
Ukraine and Romania share two gas interconnection points, in Isaccea and Mediesu Aurit. At Isaccea there are three pipelines, and the capacity of two of them is fully reserved by the Gazprom Russian group for gas supply to Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey.

The Transit 1 Isaccea-Negru Voda pipeline was exclusively used by Gazprom to supply gas to Bulgaria through Romania. However, after expiration of the pipeline booking agreement the system operators decided to bring business rules on it into compliance with EU regulations.

This Interconnection Agreement is part of the regional CESEC initiative driven by the European Commission aimed on increasing interconnectivity in Central and Southeastern Europe. Together with the recently signed interconnection agreements between Greece and Bulgaria, and between Bulgaria and Romania, this interconnection agreement will allow bi-directional (but so far only virtually northwards) gas flows from Ukraine to Greece; thus it will provide local network users possibilities to significantly diversify supply routes.
