Construction tops insolvency list

NATIONWIDE Construction has been the sector most hit by the financial crisis in 2008, according to French credit risk managers Coface.
The figure is based on the number of companies starting insolvency procedure or who have declared themselves bankrupt. Construction saw an increase of 56.29 per cent in failures compared to 2007. This was followed by a 50 per cent surge in insolvency in both the retail and hotel, restaurant and catering sectors.
Meanwhile the number of new building works is Bucharest is dropping at a faster rate than the rest of the country. Construction permits released in April for Romania fell by 6.7 per cent compared to March, according to the National Statistics Institute (INS). Around 65 per cent of the released construction permits were for rural areas.
In the first four months of 2009, 14,642 construction permits for residential buildings were issued, a 13.7 per cent decline on the first quarter of 2008.
The most significant falls were registered in Bucharest and Ilfov, the centre and the northwest. Southwest Oltenia was the only region where the number of construction permits increased.
