Cristian Popa, designated Romanian candidate for Vice-President of EIB

Cristian Popa was designated Romania's candidate for Vice-President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), the Public Finance Ministry announced on Friday.

The Finance Minister proposal was approved by the President and the Government of Romania by the adoption of the Memorandum designating Cristian Popa as Romanian candidate for European Investment Bank Vice-President, according to a Ministry release.

Next after the adoption of the Memorandum is the EIB in-house approval stage according to the procedures in place. Mihai Tanasescu has been Romania′s representative with the EIB since 2012.

Cristian Popa has a 16-year experience with the National Bank of Romania (BNR), and served three successive terms as central bank vice-governor responsible for BNR′s monetary policy, financial stability and international relations, respectively. In 2005 he introduced the inflation-targeting strategy that requires the central bank to periodically take up annual goals related to the variation of the consumer price index.

Cristian Popa also held the position of Romania′s World Bank alternate governor, and was a member of BNR′s teams for negotiation and dialogue with the IMF, the European Commission, the WB, EBRD, EIB and OECD. He also acted as coordinator of the central bank′s dialogue with international rating agencies, international investment banks and BNR′s European integration related activities (until 2007).

Cristian Popa also has a teaching and research track record. In 2007 he earned a Doctor′s degree in Economic Sciences, with a specialization in World Economy, from the Faculty of International Economic Relations of the Bucharest Academy for Economic Studies. In September 1994 he earned a scholarship with the Harvard University Department of Economics.
