World Bank: poverty set for sharp increase

Romania’s poverty rate will increase to 7.4 per cent in Romania by the end of this year compared to last year’s 5.7 per cent, according to a World Bank study drawn up together with UNICEF

June 2009 - From the Print Edition

This means that 1.59 million Romanians, including 351,000 children under 14 years of age, will have to survive on only 2.15 Euro per day.
UNICEF fears that a lack of income will also encourage parents to abandon their children, a phenomenon common to Romania in the 1980s and 1990s.
“There is already an increasing number of cases concerning parents who have given up on their children because they no longer have money to support them,” reads the report.
A major problem is considered the lack of social care provided by some local authorities around the country. Another first in recent years in Romania is the fact that the poverty rate will register a higher increase in urban areas compared to rural areas. The Moldavia region hosts the highest number of people in poverty, 17.3 per cent, while Bucharest holds only 1.9 per cent.
