Romania's waste recycling rate is 3 percent
Romania's waste recycling rate is 3 percent, while the European Union average is 36 percent, but even at this level the waste recovery potential across the Community stands at 600 million tons. 2015-09-03 10:06:00
Minister for Environment, Water and Forests Gratiela Gavrilescu told the Circular conference organized by the Green Revolution Association that the concepts of European recycling society and of zero waste are being increasingly circulated and Romania too must integrate these principles.
Gavrilescu said that grassroot-level communication is highly important for people to understand that the waste they produce is actually squandered resources. She added that the European relevant regulations must be transposed into Romanian legislation and local authorities must get involved in their transposition.
In his turn, Giovanni La Via, chairman of the European Parliament′s Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) Committee, said that the institution he represents had ended public debate on the legislation that will underpin the European Directive on circular economy. "Romania has a low recycling rate of mere 3 - 4 percent. It is very little. Waste expenses in Romania are lower than in the EU, but it′s not spending that should be increased, but waste needs to be cut down," the European official said.
He also insisted on communication at the citizen′s level, mentioning that there are countries with recycling infrastructure already in place, but that the citizens must be convinced to use it, by explaining to them the advantages of recycling. In addition, the chairman of the ENVI Committee asked the Romanian authorities to cooperate with European ones to produce comprehensive legislation on circular economy that should ensure better results.
