1.4 million Euro Norwegian funding to support selective waste collection in Romania
Through the Norwegian grants, the Norwegian Government co-financed with 1.4 million Euro a project designed to collect recyclable waste from households, implemented by Total Waste Management, part of recycling Green Group and a provider of integrated waste management solutions 2015-06-08 22:02:44 - From the Print Edition
The project, whose value amounts to four million Euro, consists of developing and implementing smart collection infrastructures in 25 major cities in Romania, aiming to take over 15,200 tonnes annually of packaging waste and electrical and electronic equipment, destined for recycling plants in the country.
"Norway has set itself the development objective to become one of the most innovative and green economies in the world," said Tove Bruvik Westberg, the Ambassador of Norway to Romania. "Optimizing existing industries, encouraging entrepreneurship and investment in eco-innovation, developing and implementing new technologies, these are some of the steps taken by Norway to promote a green economy. In line with internal strategies, Norway has decided to contribute to improving the economies of other European countries, such as Romania. Sustainable development is a global concern. The project presented today is a cutting-edge initiative in waste management in Romania, integrating both selective waste collection and processing activities."
To date, 11 collection points have been installed by Green Group in Bucharest, Brasov, Sibiu, Oradea, Drobeta Turnu Severin, Iasi, Suceava, Braila, Focsani, Pitesti and Ploiesti, with the rest of the collection points expected to be implemented by the end of the year. Through the existing collection points, about1,300 tonnes of recyclable materials were recovered, including 17 million PET bottles, 125,000 aluminium cans, 100,000 glass bottles, 353,000 kg of electronics and 154,000 kg of paper and cardboard. All collected materials are transported to recycling factories in Romania that are partners in the project, which include Greentech, Romcarbon, Greenweee, GreenLamp, Greenglass Recycling, Vrancart, Ecopaper Zarnesti and AMEP. The first project of this type was launched in 2013 in Buzau, from private funds, by Green Group. The Group has since implemented in 2014 other two stations of this type, at Carrefour Baneasa and Carrefour Vitantis.
