INS: Over 38 per cent of public roads in Romania are stone or dirt roads

About 40 per cent of public roads in Romania are made of stone or dirt and only 35.4 per cent have been modernized, according to data published by National institute of Statistics (INS).

At the end of last year, public roads totalled 85,362 km, of which 17,272 km (20.2 per cent) national roads, 35,505 km (41.6 per cent) county roads and 32,585 km (38,2 per cent) communal roads.

"As for the type of covering, the public road structure includes: 30,240 km (35.4 per cent) modernized roads (90.5 per cent of modernized roads have heavy and middle asphalt coating), 22,088 km (25.9 per cent) roads with light coating and 33,034 km (38.7 per cent) stone or dirt roads. The technical state of public roads included 44.4 per cent of modernized roads and 52 per cent of roads with light coating which have an expired service period," INS shows.

Of all national roads 6,194 km (35.9 per cent) are European roads, 683 km (6.1 per cent more than in 2013) highways, 276 km (1.6 per cent) roads with 3 traffic lanes, 1,673 km (9.7 per cent) roads with 4 lanes and 22 km (0.1 per cent) roads with 6 lanes.

County roads were roads with light coating (44.2 per cent) and communal roads were stone roads (46.3 per cent).

On the other hand, railways of public use amounted to 10,777km at the end of 2014, of which 10,638 km (98.7 per cent) had normal gauge, 5 km had narrow gauge and 134 km (1.3 per cent) had wide gauge. At the end of 2014 there were 4,029 km of electrified railway, representing 37.4 per cent of the railway in exploitation.
