Romanian-Spanish joint venture will build 60 km of Northern segment from Transylvania highway

The Romanian National Company of Motorways and National Roads (CNADNR) assigned a 200 million Euro worth contract to a Romanian-Spanish consortium for building the highway segment linking Suplacu de Barcau and Bors in North-Western Romania, as part of Transylvania highway, half built by American company Bechtel.

The segment consists in a little more than 60 km highway and the estimated interval for the construction is set for two years, with warranty interval of 30 months.

The project of Transylvania highway started in 2004 with the signing of a contract of 2.2 billion Euro to build 415 km, but the portion made so far with State funding exceeds 10 percent of the total path. In late May 2013, the contract with the American company Bechtel for the construction of the Transylvania highway was cancelled, with Romania owing 37.2 million Euro and 50 million Euro of back payments.

The minister for infrastructure and investment projects said at that time that the only way to continue the construction of the motorway would be through a public-private partnership or concession. At that time, the estimated year for completing the project is 2026.
